Softball Falls to #11 Virginia Wesleyan

LYNCHBURG, Va- The Randolph softball team hosted its home finale on Saturday afternoon as it faced #11 Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins claimed both games of the doubleheader by scores of 10-1 and 7-3.

In the first game, the Marlins led 5-0 after the second inning. In the Randolph portion of the inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Dominque Irving's (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) single scored a run to make it 5-1.

Virginia Wesleyan scored twice in the third inning and three times in the fourth inning to pull away. The game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) started in the circle for the WildCats. She pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on three hits. She walked four. Danielle Shannon (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) came in relief and gave up five runs (three earned) and walked three while striking out one.

Irving was 1-for-3 with a RBI. Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) batted 1-for-2 with a run scored.

In the second game, the Marlins led 4-0 after three innings of play. Randolph rallied in the fourth. Lucado led off with a single and Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) then singled. With Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) pinch running for Hawkins, a wild pitch moved runners up a base. Kayla Love (League City, Texas/Tallwood) grounded out to second base to score Lucado. Taylor Friess' (Goode, Va./Liberty HS) sac fly plated a second run. Irving singled then stole second base. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) reached on an error that allowed Irving to come home and moved the score to 4-3.

The Marlins were held off the scoreboard for the next two innings. It was still 4-3 in the seventh inning but VWU scored three times to go ahead 7-3. The WildCats tried another rally in the bottom of the inning. The bases were loaded with two out for Nuckols but a fielder's choice got the runner tagged out before reaching third base and the game was over.

Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) went the distance for Randolph in the circle. She surrendered seven runs on 10 hits. She walked two and struck out two.

Irving collected three hits, a run scored, and a stolen base. Nuckols finished 2-for-5. Allie Jarrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) went 2-for-3. Friess was 3-for-3. Hawkins was 2-for-2.

Randolph travels to Guilford on Tuesday afternoon. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 2:00 p.m.
