Softball Sweeps Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Randolph softball team traveled to Guilford on Tuesday afternoon for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader. The WildCats swept the pair from the Quakers winning 9-1 and 10-1 with both going five innings. It is the first sweep of GC by Randolph since 2013.

The wins improve Randolph's overall record to 10-27 and 4-12 in the ODAC. Guilford drops to 11-25 and 2-14 in the conference.

The WildCats jumped ahead in the first inning. Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) led off with a single and stole second base. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) doubled to score Irving. Allie Jarrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) doubled to score Nuckols as the 'Cats led 2-0.

Randolph added a run in the second inning on an Irving RBI double. The WildCats blew the game open in the third inning with six runs.

Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) pitched five innings in the circle for Randolph. She limited the Quakers to one run on five hits. She walked one and struck out two.

Irving was 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base, a run scored, and two RBI. Nuckols was 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored, and two RBI. She swiped a pair of bases. Jarrett batted 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and a RBI. Taylor Friess (Goode, Va./Liberty) finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Lexie Lama (Benson, N.C./West Johnson) and Paige Naples (Bedford, Va./Liberty) were 1-for-3 and 1-for-2, respectively, with a run scored.

In the second game, the score was 0-0 through the first inning. The WildCats struck in the second inning. Friess' double to centerfield scored two runs as did an Irving triple to right field. Nuckols' RBI single made it 5-0 Randolph.

The WildCats' added to their lead in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) reached on an error that scored Diane Mahiai (Chesapeake, Va./Salem). A Friess sacrifice fly plated another run. A Nuckols triple scored two more runs as the 'Cats increased their lead to 9-0.

The Quakers got a run back in their portion of the third inning. The WildCats tallied their 10th run of the game on a Friess RBI fielder's choice.

In the circle, Jenna St. John (Concord ,Va./Appomattox) pitched four innings scattering four hits. She allowed one unearned run and walked one. Danielle Shannon (Greensville, Va./Riverheads) pitched one inning and surrendered two hits.

Nuckols was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. She stole a base. Irving batted 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, and two RBI with a stolen base. Friess was 1-for-2 with a double, one run scored, and four RBI. Kayla Love (League City, Texas/Tallwood) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Randolph concludes the regular season at Ferrum on Saturday. Game 1 of the doubleheader begins at 3:00 p.m.
