GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Randolph softball team traveled to North Carolina on Saturday to face Greensboro in a non-conference doubleheader. The Pride claimed both games winning 3-0 and 5-4.
It was a pitcher's duel in the first game and it was scoreless through three and a half innings. Â With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Allie Cox hit a home run to left off of Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) to get the Pride on the board. GC put two more runs on in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Randolph was held to four hits as Greensboro starter Cheyanne Cox went the distance striking out six WildCats. WildCat starter St. John went five innings giving up all three runs. She struck out four. Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) came in for one inning and surrendered just two hits while striking out two.
In the second game, Greensboro took a 3-0 lead after two innings of play. The WildCat bats, however, woke up in the Randolph portion of the third. Taylor Friess (Goode, Va./Liberty) led off with a double. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) reached on an error and stole second base. Dominque Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) legged out a single to the Greensboro pitcher. With the bases loaded, Diane Mahiai (Chesapeake, Va./Salem) smacked a double out to left center to bring in three runs and tie the game at 3-all. Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) then came up and singled home Mahiai to give Randolph a 4-3 lead. The WildCats had another opportunity with the bases loaded and two outs but Friess struck out to end the inning.
The WildCat lead was short-lived as Greensboro answered in their portion of the inning. The Pride tied it up on a Hannah King RBI single and then went ahead when Tatum Gregory scored on an error.
Pitching dominated for the rest of the game as neither team scored again and both teams went to their bullpens. Danielle Shannon (Greensville, Va./Riverheads) pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up six hits striking out one Pride batter. She got out of a bases loaded jam in the third and fourth innings to keep Greensboro from adding to its lead.
Scruggs went 2 1/3 innings. She gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits. She walked one batter. Game 1 starter Cox scattered three hits and struck out three.
Irving was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and a stole a base. Mahiai finished 1-for-4 with a double, run scored, and three runs batted in. Friess was 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and a stolen base.
Randolph ends its two-day N.C. trip with a doubleheader at Salem College tomorrow afternoon. Game 1 begins at 12:00 p.m.
