HILTON HEAD, S.C.- The Randolph men's tennis team played the first of two matches at the Hilton Head Island Tennis Resort on Sunday. The WildCats fell to St. Olaf 8-1 in their first match.
The lone win for the 'Cats came at second singles by Alex Kulvivat (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). After dropping the first set to Ethan Bruha 7-6, Kulvivat rallied to take the second set 6-1 and then the super tiebreaker 10-7.
Nicolas Alvarado (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Olimpo) fell to Henry Smith 6-2, 6-3 at first singles. Bhuvan Ambekallu (Karnataka, India/Bethany High) had a tough battle with Tony Klagge at third singles falling 6-4, 6-4. Colby Cook (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) lost to Tim Roback 6-1, 6-1 at fourth singles. Jose Merhej (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) was defeated by Jakub Belik 6-2, 6-0 at #5 singles.
Randolph was bested by DePauw 9-0 in their second match. In the doubles portion, Alvarado and Kulvivat won at game at first doubles. Cook and Ambekallu took three games at second doubles.
Alvarado won a game at first singles as did Kulvivat at second singles. Ambekallu won a pair of games at third singles. Merhej took a game at fifth singles.
Randolph returns to conference play on Friday as it will host cross-city rival Lynchburg on Friday. Match time will be at 4:30 p.m.
