BRIDGEWATER, Va.- The Randolph softball team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Bridgewater on Saturday in a doubleheader. The Eagles won both games 5-4 and 8-7 on walk offs.
Randolph's record now stands at 6-15 overall and 0-2 in the ODAC. BC improves to 12-10 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) singled up the middle in the third inning with one out. The hit gave her her milestone 100th for her career. Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) singled. Allie Jarrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) singled and advanced to second base. A throwing error allowed Nuckols and Irving to score to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles answered with a four-run third inning to go ahead 4-2. The score remained that way until the Randolph sixth. Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) had a RBI single and a Nuckols groundout allowed another run to score as the WildCats tied the game. The game was decided in the bottom of the seventh inning as Jazmyn Smith's RBI double brought home the game-winning run.
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) got the start in the circle for Randolph. She pitched 2 1/3 innings alloweing four runs on seven hits. She struck out one. Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) came in for 3 2/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits walking two and striking out two.
Jarrett was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) went 2-for-3. Nuckols finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. Lucado was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in.
In the second game, Jarrett's two-run single gave the WildCats a 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the second inning, Irving singled to score Lucado. Lucado' single in the third scored two runs. Jarrett's sac fly in the fourth inning gave Randolph a 6-0 lead.
BC rallied with three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead going to the seventh inning. Randolph was able to tie the game up on Lucado's RBI double. In the Eagles' seventh, Brooklyn Fridley's single advanced Peyton Gregory to second base. Gregory moved to third and scored the game-winning run on a fielding error by Irving.
Danielle Shannon (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) started in the circle for the 'Cats. She allowed three runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. She walked one. Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) came in for 1 1/3 innings. She gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits walking one and striking out one.
Diane Mahiai (Chesapeake, Va./Salem) was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Lucado finished 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, with three RBI. Nuckols was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. She swiped a pair of bases. Irving hit 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. She stole a base. Jarrett was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Randolph hosts #11 Randolph-Macon tomorrow afternoon. Game 1 of the doubleheader begins at 1:30 p.m.
