LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted #11 Randolph-Macon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets claimed both games of the doubleheader by scores of 11-7 and 10-1.
The WildCats got out to the lead in the first inning of Game 1. Allie Jarrett's (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) triple scored a run and Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) singled home a pair of runs to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead.
RM-C would score twice in the top of the second. The WildCats got both runs back in the third inning. Paige Naples (Bedford, Va./Liberty) tripled home a run and then scored on a wild pitch to put Randolph ahead 5-2.
The 'Jackets plated another pair of runs in the fourth inning. Randolph scored once in their portion of the inning as Naples reached on an error that allowed Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) to come home from third base. The Yellow Jackets broke the game open with an eight-run fifth inning to lead 12-6. The WildCats scored once as Irving reached on an error and Lucado scored. Randolph-Macon scored three more times in the sixth inning as it would take the victory.
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomottax) pitched 5.2 innings in the circle. She allowed seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits. She walked six and struck out one batter. Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) gave up eight runs on four hits and walked three in 1/3 of an inning.
Jarrett was 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and one RBI. Lucado finished 3-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI. Chloe Persinger (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McClure) went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Naples was 1-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and one RBI.
In the second game, the score was tied 1-1 after the first inning. It would remain that way until the Yellow Jacket fourth inning as RM-C scored a run to take a 2-1 lead. The Jackets scored twice in the fifth and sixth to go ahead 6-1. RM-C would go on to tack on four more runs in the seventh inning.
Danielle Shannon (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) went five innings in the circle and gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits. She walked three batters. Persinger came in for two innings and surrendered six runs on five hits walking three.
Naples was 2-for-3. Irving hit 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Diane Mahiai (Chesapeake, Va./Salem) was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Randolph travels to Averett on Wednesday for a doubleheader rescheduled from March 12. The first game starts at 2:00 p.m.
