LYNCHBURG, Va.- After a three week layoff, the Randolph women's lacrosse team returned to action on Wednesday afternoon as they hosted Sweet Briar at a rainy WildCat Stadium. The WildCats fended off the Vixens as they won by the score of 13-12.
Randolph evens its record at 2-2. Sweet Briar's record also evens at 3-3 overall.
The WildCats got out to a 3-0 lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Vixens closed to within one goal at 4-3 at the conclusion of the period.
Sweet Briar would go on to knot the game up at 6-all with 6:15 remaining in the second quarter. Randolph answered with back-to-back goals by Beverly Alcock (Purcellville, Va.) to go ahead 8-6 at halftime.
The teams exchanged goals in the third quarter with the 'Cats holding a slim lead, 10-9, at the end of the period. Randolph pushed ahead in the early portion of the fourth quarter on goals by Maddie Friel (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) and Alcock. The Vixens capitalized on Randolph yellow cards with a pair of man-up goals to close the score to 12-11 with 6:43 remaining in the game.
It was still a one-goal Randolph lead with 2:08 remaining in the quarter. The Vixens won the ensuing draw control but Alcock forced a turnover that she recovered with under two minutes remaining. A shot by Sophia Cirone (Stuart, Fla./South Fork) with 19 ticks left was saved and the Vixens looked to clear the ball. Sweet Briar's clear failed and Randolph took over as it ran out the clock.
Randolph outshot Sweet Briar 31-21 with shots on goal favoring the WildCats 20-18. The WildCats also led in ground balls 23-13 and draw controls 16-13.
Alcock led the 'Cats with six goals scored. She picked up four groundballs and won six draws. Cirone added four goals, four ground balls, and six draws. Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) and Friel both scored once. Alexis Bossi (Falls Church, Va./Justice) scored one goal.
Julyann Marx (Abington, Md./Joppatowne) and Marcela Izquierdo-Poza (Madrid, Spain/IES Julio Verne) both caused three turnovers each. Izquierdo-Poza had a team-high five groundballs. Olivia Richards (Limestone, Tenn./Pinecrest) won six draws. Taylor Batty (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) stopped six shots for Randolph in the cage.
The WildCats host West Virginia Wesleyan this Saturday. Game time is at 4:00 following the men's game at 1:00 p.m.
