LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's lacrosse team began its 2022 season on Sunday afternoon as it hosted Oglethorpe at a cold and wet WildCat Stadium. Randolph fell behind early and rallied in the fourth quarter but fell to the Stormy Petrels 15-9.
The Stormy Petrels scored the game's first goal less than a minute into the first quarter. The WildCats answered on a score from Tyler Johnson (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) to knot the game at 1-1. Oglethorpe moved ahead 3-1 before a penalty on the Stormy Petrels gave Randolph a man-up opportunity that Zach Miller (Corpus Christi, Texas./Fork Union Military Academy) took advantage of as his goal made it 3-2 with 8:06 remaining in the period. Oglethorpe scored three straight times to lead 6-2 at the end of the quarter.
The score remained at 6-2 for most of the second quarter as neither team could generate any type of offense. The 'Cats finally scored with 3:49 remaining in the period to make it 6-3. The Stormy Petrels tallied two scores to lead 8-3 at the break.
Oglethorpe scored three more times to move ahead 11-3. Jack Dolan's (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) goal put the score at 11-4 but the Stormy Petrels answered with three goals to lead 14-4 heading into the final quarter of play.
Randolph tallied a pair of goals to make it 14-6 with 11:43 remaining in the fourth quarter. Oglethorpe scored once to put the score at 15-6. Dolan then scored three straight goals for the WildCats to get the score to 15-9 but the rally fell short in the end for Randolph.
The WildCats finished the game outshooting the Stormy Petrels 36-33.
Dolan had five goals on the afternoon. Miller scored twice and added two helpers. Johnson and Kent Snoddy (Palmyra, Va./Fluvanna County) both scored once. William Olichney (Lynchburg, Va.) had eight saves in the pipes for the 'Cats.
Randolph hosts Averett this coming Saturday. Game time will be at 5:00 p.m.
