LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted Ferrum on Wednesday evening in the last conference and home game for the month. The Panthers would get the better of the 'Cats as they won 90-76.
Ferrum got out to a 9-2 lead in the first half at the 16:27 mark. Randolph would soon cut the deficit to three points with a 10-6 run. The Panthers built the lead back up to eight but a three by Jerry Goodman (Suffolk, Va./Portsmouth Christian School) followed by a jump shot by Myron Williams (Fayetteville, N.C./Cape Fear) made it 20-17 Ferrum. It was still a one-possession contest, 29-26 Ferrum, with 5:29 remaining in the half. A 7-0 run by Ferrum gave it a 36-29 lead with 3:25 left. Randolph closed to six points, 40-34, with 1:52 remaining. The Panthers upped their lead to 45-34 with 51 seconds left. Randolph closed to eight points at the break.
Ferrum came out of the second half on a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 52-37. The WildCats then went on a 19-8 run to make it a two-possession game, 58-54, with 11:40 left. It was still a 76-68 Ferrum lead with 3:30 left to play. The Panthers converted eight free throws in the end and made three baskets to pull away from Randolph and come out with the victory.
"Really disappointed in the response to missing some shots tonight," said head coach Pete Hamilton. "I thought we defended poorly in the first half and missed a whole lot of great looks for our offense. I hope moving forward we don't let shots falling have such an impact on our defensive presence."
Ferrum was 34-of-64 (53.1%) from the floor and 6-of-15 (40%) from behind the three-point arc. The Panthers were also efficient from the charity stripe as they were 16-19 (84.2%). Randolph made 28-of-67 field goals (41.8%) and went 7-of-24 (29.2%) in three-point attempts. The WildCats were 13-of-18 in free throws.
Randolph controlled the glass with a 41-34 advantage. The 'Cats did outscore the Panthers in second chance points 22-6 and received 40 points from their bench.
Jordan Phillips-McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) was one of four players to reach double figures with a team-high 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Ty Clingerman (Front Royal, Va./Skyline HS) scored a career-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Landon Wagoner (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle School) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Williams also had 10 points to go with six rebounds. Cole Perry (Salisbury, N.C./Jesse Carson) finished with five points, a team-high seven assists, and six rebounds.
"Really great to see some bench guys give us a boost tonight," noted Hamilton. "Murph with a career high and Myron and Landon coming in with a great presence in the lane for us. Those guys were efficient and gave us some sparks when we were trying to hang around."
Randolph travels to Southern Virginia on Saturday. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
