Lynchburg. Va- In a midday ODAC meeting, the Randolph Women's Basketball team faced off against the Guilford Quakers. The Wildcats used a big second half to pull away from the Quakers, winning 78-42. The win, Randolph's fourth in a row, gives the WildCats an overall record of 6-2 and 3-1 in the ODAC.
The 'Cats got out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first five minutes behind two threes from senior
Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va.Gloucester). After a timeout from Guilford, the Quakers were able to go on a small run of their own, behind seven made free throws, which ended the quarter 13-10 in Guilford's favor.
Moving to the second quarter, the Quakers were able to obtain their largest lead of the afternoon, leading 21-14 with 6:39 remaining. From then on it was all 'Cats as they ended the first half on a 21-3 run. With outstanding defense and great ball movement, the WildCats were able to take an 11-point lead into the locker room, 35-24.
After the break, Randolph was able to push the lead to 14 with just over two minutes having gone by in the third quarter. With the margin already in double digits, Randolph was able to go on a 9-2 run late in the quarter pushing the lead to 56-34 with 1:28 remaining. A couple of baskets shrunk the lead but the quarter still ended with the 'Cats up big, 58-37.
The fourth quarter was much of the same with Randolph continuing to play fantastic defense as they were able to hold the Quakers to five points in the last frame. They began the quarter on a 12-2 run and they just had to see the game out from here.
"Very proud of effort today," said head coach
Steve Lanpher. "I thought we controlled the pace of the game through our defense once again. We took away their perimeter shooters & really made it tough on Lindsay Gauldin! In the first quarter, we were a little tentative vs their full court pressure, but once we started attacking them we found our rhythm.
Randolph controlled the glass with a 32-18 advantage. The WildCats led 44-20 in points off turnovers and 38-18 in points in the paint.
Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) led the Wildcats in scoring with 20 points on top of five steals and four assists followed by
Jessica Jennings (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) with 16 points and four assists.
Nadia West (Monroe, Va./Amherst County) had a career-high 12 points to go with three rebounds. O'Neil finished with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and also came away with three rebounds and three steals.
Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson (Newport News, Va./Heritage) ended the game with seven points eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
"I thought Jess and Nadia were huge sparks off the bench, noted Lanpher. "Offensively, we attacked & really moved the basketball well with a season high 20 assists. It was great to see Cam finding her three- point stroke once again. Kylie was strong on both ends and her a Jess led us in scoring with 20 & 16 respectively."
Randolph is home again next Wednesday as they take on Randolph-Macon. Game time will be at 5:00 p.m.
