LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team made the short trip across town to the University of Lynchburg for a midweek ODAC tilt. The WildCats made some history on the night as they defeated the Hornets 56-49.

The victory is the first for the WildCats over the Hornets since February 2009 and snaps a 21-game winless streak against Lynchburg. It is also Randolph's first win on Lynchburg's home floor since 1998.

"I thought defensively we came out with the right mindset," said head coach Steve Lanpher.  "Our zone limited their containment and limited their three-point threats and did a nice job limiting their 2nd shot opportunities. I felt like defensively for the first three quarters we had our best defensive effort of the year."

Randolph controlled the opening tip and scored on a jumper by Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson). The WildCats led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter. It was a 30-16 Randolph lead at halftime.

The WildCat lead grew to as much as 22 points in the third period. Lynchburg rallied in the final period as they outscored the 'Cats 22-13 and cut their lead to single digits late in the quarter. The WildCats were ahead 54-49 with six ticks left. Jessica Jennings (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) was fouled and went to the free throw line and made both attempts to ice the game for the 'Cats.

Cabrera led with 17 points. Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson (Newport News, Va./Heritage) added 16 points.

"Yanessa came up big on both ends and Teniyah sparked us offensively, noted Lanpher". "I thought Simone and Abbie did a nice job controlling the boards and Jess really provided us a spark off the bench."

Randolph hosts Guilford this coming Saturday at Giles Gymnasium. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
