Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Dropped by Carolina 63-50

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team hosted Carolina University on Saturday afternoon at Giles Gymnasium. The Bruins outscored the WildCats in all but one quarter as they would win 63-50.

Randolph was ahead 5-2 early in the first quarter until the Bruins used an 8-0 run to go up 10-5 with under five minutes remaining in the period. The WildCats twice cut the Carolina lead to a point but the Bruins would lead 16-11 at the end of the quarter.

Carolina's lead grew to nine points early in the second quarter. The WildCats closed to seven points at 6:08 but the Bruins went on an 8-4 run to close out the period and went into halftime ahead 31-20.

Randolph was down 40-27 at the 4:20 mark of the third quarter. The 'Cats started a comeback and ended the period with an 8-0 run to make it 40-35 going into the final quarter of play.

The WildCats had new life as they made it a two-possession contest. Carolina, however, upped its lead to 11 points, 47-36, with 7:08 remaining to play. The Bruin lead grew to 14 points, 52-38, with 4:14 left. Randolph closed to eight points with 2:07 left and then it was a seven-point contest with 49 ticks remaining. The Bruins in the end converted four free throws and layup to put the game away.

"I thought we came out flat defensively and allowed Carolina university to get comfortable," said head coach Steve Lanpher. "We allowed too much dribble penetration especially from their guards. Offensively, we were too careless with the ball. It's tough to win a game when you turn the ball over 27 times."

Randolph was 17-of-55 (30.9%) from the floor and just 2-of-13 (15.4%) from behind the three-point arc. The Bruins were 21-of-47 (44.7%) and 3-of-12 (25%) in three-point attempts. Rebounds slightly favored the WIldCats 36-35.

Jessica Jennings (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) led the WildCats with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. She grabbed three rebounds and came away with two steals. Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson (Newport News, Va./Heritage) added 11 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) chipped in eight points, nine rebounds, and four steals.

Randolph will host its final game of the month on Tuesday as it takes on Gallaudet. Game time will be at 5:30 p.m.
