LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team hosted Ferrum in Old Dominion Athletic Conference match on Thursday night at Giles Gymnasium. The WildCats dropped the first set but recovered to take the next three and win 3-1 (22-25, 25-7, 25-18, 26-24).
The WildCats even their record at 11-11 and move to 2-7 in the conference. The Panthers fall to 6-16 overall and 0-9 in the ODAC.
Ferrum was ahead 10-6 in the first set before the WildCats rallied with an 8-0 run to take a 14-10 lead. The Panthers responded with their own 8-0 run to grab the lead back and go ahead 18-14. Randolph used a 5-0 run to take a 19-18 lead. Ferrum would outscore Randolph 8-3 down the stretch to take the first set.
The WildCats dominated the second set as they got out in front 9-0. They would never trail in the frame and won 25-7 to even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Randolph led by as much as 15-5. Ferrum tried to chip away at the WildCat lead but could not as the WildCats stayed out in front and won 25-18.
The fourth set saw Ferrum lead 6-1 and eventually 12-6. The Panthers were ahead 17-10 and 20-15 looking poised to force the match to a fifth frame. The 'Cats had other plans as they used a 7-1 run to take a 22-21 lead. FC tallied two points to regain its lead but Randolph outscored Ferrum 4-1 to take the set and match win.
Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian) led the team with 12 kills and nine total blocks. Nikki Hurt (Cartersville, Va./Cumberland) had a double-double effort of 10 kills and 13 digs. Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) had a season-high 19 digs. Vivianna Gustin (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) added 16 digs. Jayda Domenech (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) led in assists with 19 and also had seven digs. Melody Washington (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) chipped in 18 assists. Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) finished with eight kills, four digs, and four total blocks. She hit .412.
Randolph hosts Roanoke on Saturday. Game time will be at 1:00 p.m.
