Women’s Basketball Drops 62-45 Decision to Randolph-Macon

LYNCHURG, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team hosted one of the top teams in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on Saturday as it welcomed Randolph-Macon to Giles Gymnasium. The Yellow Jackets led from the start as they defeated the WildCats 62-45.

Randolph falls to 11-4 overall and 6-3 in the ODAC. Randolph-Macon improves to 10-3 overall and 8-0 in the conference.

The Yellow Jackets led by as much as eight points in the first quarter. The WildCats were able to close their deficit to five points, 16-11, at the end of the period.

A 9-3 RMC run to start the second period gave the visitors a 26-14 lead with 5:42 remaining in the quarter. The 'Jackets led 32-18 at the break.

RMC added to its lead in the third quarter with a 9-4 run to go up 41-22. The Yellow Jacket lead grew to as much as 23 points as Randolph could not eliminate its deficit.

"I knew going in this was going to be a tough matchup for us," said head coach Steve Lanpher.  "They are undefeated thus far in the conference so it was a good benchmark game for us.  I thought we competed hard but we need to seek more consistency on both ends of the floor. Offensively we need to be more disciplined and patient.  We shot too many early contested shots and it showed in our low shooting percentage."

The WildCats shot 15-of-61 (24.6%) on the day overall and just 3-of-22 (13.6%) from behind the three-point line. Randolph-Macon was 24-of-58 (41.4%) from the field and just 5-of-21 from behind the three-point arc. The Yellow Jackets led the rebounding battle 49-44.

Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson (Newport News, Va./Heritage) led the 'Cats in scoring with 16 points and added five rebounds, a block, and a steal. Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) chipped in nine points, eight rebounds, and a steal. Yanessa Cabrera (Mansassa, Va./Stonewall Jackson) scored six points, pulled down seven rebounds, dished out three assists, and came away with two steals.

"Teniyah continues to shine on the offensive end as she led us with 16 points today," noted Lanpher.  "Kendra and Alana, two other first- years played some great minutes off the bench as well."

Randolph travels to Hollins this coming Wednesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
