Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team hosted a tri-match on Saturday afternoon with Regent and Methodist. The WildCat split the tri-match as they defeated the Royals 3-1 and fell to the Monarchs 3-1.
In the Regent match, the WildCats fell behind 0-1 after dropping the first set 25-23 but came back to win the next three 25-16, 25-23, and 25-8. Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) led in kills with 13 and Melody Washington (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) adding 10. McGinnis also added 10 digs. Kenleigh Gunter (Troutville, Va./Lord Botetourt) had a team-best 24 digs. Emily Barcenas (Lawrenceville, Ga./Lanier HS) had a double-double performance of 28 assists and 10 digs.
Against the Monarchs in the second match, the first set was tied 6-6 but the 'Cats ripped off an 11-1 run to jump ahead 17-7. The WildCats stayed comfortably ahead as they would go on to win the frame 25-17.
In the second set, Methodist led 10-5 but Randolph came back to tie the set at 11-11 and 12-12. MU then went on a 7-1 run to lead 19-13. The WildCats closed to 19-16 but Methodist's 6-2 run was enough for the 25-18 win to even the match at 1-1.
Randolph got the first point of the third set on a kill by Logan Warren (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School). Methodist then registered the next five points to go up 5-1. Its lead went up to 10-4 and grew to 16-5. The WildCats tried to get back in but the Monarch lead was too much to overcome as they won 25-19.
The Monarchs had momentum going into the fourth set as they started off with a 10-1 lead. Randolph was able to half it to 10-5 but MU got further ahead with a 6-0 run to go up 16-5. The Methodists stay out ahead for the remainder of the set as they won 25-12.
Warren led the WildCats with a career-best 20 kills and hit .326. McGinnis tallied 11 kills and eight digs. Gunter led in digs with 25. Barcenas totaled 33 assists and nine digs. Washington picked up four block assists with Ainsley Simmons (Fincastle, Va./James River) and Lily Wilson (Fincastle, Va./James River) both adding three block assists each.
Randolph returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Tuesday at it hosts Virginia Wesleyan. Start time for the match will be at 7:00 p.m.
