LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's tennis team hosted a four-team WildCat Invite on Saturday afternoon. ODAC schools the University of Lynchburg and Bridgewater along with Pfeiffer from the USA South participated.
There were seven flights in singles play and four flights in doubles play. Nico Alvarado (Santiago, Chilie/Colegio/Olimpo) won his opening match against Pfieffer's Benny Pfiffer 6-4, 7-5. He would go on to drop a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Canon Secord from Bridgewater 6-3, 6-0 in the championship match.
In the second flight, Alex Kulvivat (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) went up against Lynchburg's Cooper Brewen. Kulvivat would win 6-1, 6-3.
Bhuvan Ambekallu (Karnataka, India/Bethany High) went up against Bridgewater's Matthew Gordon in the third flight. Ambekallu would win 6-4, 6-4. He would go to the super tiebreaker against Pfeiffer's Alec Taylor in the championship match but lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-10.
Colby Cook (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) won in the fifth flight due to retirement from Pfeiffer's Phillip Conaway. He would fall to Bridgewater's Matthew Leonard 6-1, 6-1 in the championship bracket.
In the doubles portion, the duo of Kulvivat and Alvarado won a close match against Lynchburg's Vigdorchik and Brewen 8-7 (7-3). The pair would drop an 8-3 decision to Secord and Gordon from Bridgewater.
Cook and Ambekallu teamed up in the second flight. They lost to Masters and Garrido from Pfieffer 8-2. The duo would win their consolation match 8-6.
Jose Merhej (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and Lynchburg's Thomas teamed up at the fourth flight. They lost 8-0 to Jason Giesbrecht and Phillips. The pair would win their consolation match against Bridgewater's Kline and Arnold 8-7 (7-5).
The men's team will faced Brevard next Sunday at home against Brevard. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m.
