DANVILLE, Va.- The season opener for the Randolph men's soccer team was pushed back while both the WildCats and host Averett waited out a weather delay. The two teams did get their game underway and the 'Cats came out the victors with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win.
The Cougars did not threaten in the early goings of the first half as they were held to one blocked shot in the first 30 minutes. Randolph attacked with five shots in the first 26 and a half minutes of play. In the 34th minute, Evan Blow's (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) shot was turned away by Cougar keeper Tyler Yates and Noah Carney (Charleston, W.V./Homeschool) would be there to put away the rebound as the 'Cats took a 1-0 lead.
The score stood at 1-0 until halftime. Averett had a look at tying the game at 40:24 but Erick Blick's shot hit off the crossbar.
In the second half, AU had a pair of shots foiled by Randolph goalie Zach Aylor (Vinton, Va./William Byrd). In the 63rd minute, a foul on the WildCats' Hordy Ndamo (Kissimmee FL./Osceola) granted Averett a penalty kick. Blick was able to capitalize as he converted on the try to knot the game at 1-1. Later in the 75th minute, a free kick from the Cougars' Lluc Pou from near 25 yards out went over the head of Aylor and into the back of the net to give the home team a 2-1 lead.
The Averett lead was short-lived as Randolph was able to get tie the match up less than seven minutes later. Gavin Leverette (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) played a corner to Blow who headed it in for the score.
Randolph had a few late chances at a game winner but it was for naught as the game headed to an extra period. In the first overtime, Kyle May (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) nearly won it for the WildCats but his shot glanced off the crossbar. The second overtime saw Ashton Poythress (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) played a cross past Yates and to Carney who put into the back of the net for the winning goal.
The WildCats led in shots 25-17 and 12-6 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were in Randolph's favor 9-4.
For Carney, it was his third career game with two or more goals scored. It was also his fourth career game winner.
Randolph hosts Pfeiffer in its home opener on Sunday. Game time from WildCat Stadium will be at 6:00 p.m.
