Men’s Soccer Topped by Lynchburg 3-2 in ODAC Quarterfinals

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The last time the Randolph men's soccer team faced rival Lynchburg on the Hornets' home turf it was the ODAC quarterfinals in the Fall of 2018. The WildCats were held to just one shot in the game as they lost 3-0.  This time around in the Spring of 2021, the two schools met again in the ODAC quarterfinals at Shellenberger Field. Randolph put two goals on the board as the game was tied close to the midway point of the second half but Lynchburg's goal in the 64th minute held up as the Hornets won 3-2.

The WildCats end their 2021 spring season with a final record of 5-3-1. Lynchburg now advances to the ODAC semifinals to take on top seed Hampden-Sydney who knocked off Ferrum in penalty kicks 3-2.

Randolph had a couple of scoring chances in the first 12 minutes of the contest. Evan Blow (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) and Ashton Poythress (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) both recorded shots on goal that were turned away with Blow having a second shot attempt blocked. The Hornets scored in the 16th minute as Luke Mega scored on an assist by Joey Daly. Lynchburg scored again in the 22nd minute as Nick Foley's free kick found Josh Auger for the score.

Despite trailing 2-0, the WildCats did not give up. Randolph was able to find the back of the net in the 31st minute as Noah Carney (Charleston, W.V./Homeschool) fed to Wes Boor (Lovingston, Va./Nelson County) who hit a long shot from the right to the opposite side of the goal and in to make it a 2-1 game where the score stood at halftime.

The 'Cats looked for an opportunity to tie the game in the second half. A foul in the penalty area resulted in a penalty kick for Randolph. Blow was able to convert on the try and the game was tied 2-2 in the 57th minute.

With new life, the WildCats now searched for a way to take the lead. Lynchburg, however, regained the lead in the 64th minute on another goal by Mega.

Shots by Carney and Tucker Leverone (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) were blocked in the 69th minute. A Brandon Betts' (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) shot was saved by Hornet keeper Kyle Gallagher and Leverone's attempt in the 83rd was high. The WildCats did not get near the goal again as Lynchburg held off any Randolph threat.

Zach Aylor (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) finished with five saves for Randolph. Gallagher had four saves.

The Hornets had a slight edge in total shots 17-15 and in shots on goal 8-6. Both teams had six corner kicks. There was a total of 39 fouls in the game with 21 called on Randolph and 18 on Lynchburg.
