HARRISONBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's volleyball travelled up to Eastern Mennonite to face the Royals on Sunday afternoon. Despite a fervent rally in the third set, the WildCats fell to EMU 3-0 (14-25, 17-25, 28-30).
The Royals got out to an 8-2 lead in the first set. Randolph rallied with a 5-1 run to close to within two points, 9-7. A 7-1 run by Eastern Mennonite staked the home team up to a 16-8 advantage. EMU's lead grew to 22-9 as it went on to easily take the set 25-14.
Eastern Mennonite led 8-2 in the second set. The 'Cats closed to within four points at 12-8 but could not get closer to catching the Royals. Randolph got to within five points at 23-17 but EMU ended with back-to-back kills to take the victory and lead 2-0 in the match.
The Royals once again got out ahead 8-2 in the third set and were up 14-7. Down 17-11, the WildCats rallied with a 9-2 run to go up 20-19. After falling behind 21-20, kills by Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) helped to put Randolph back on top 22-21. EMU, however, tallied three straight kills to take the lead back and go up 24-22. A service error on the Royals gave Randolph a point and the 'Cats added a Ambrose service ace and a kill by Meghan Chaffins (Temperanceville, Va./Holly Grove Christian) to inch ahead 25-24. The two teams then traded points with neither abled to get the deciding point. The WildCats led 28-27 but attack errors by Ambrose and a kill by EMU's Hannah Johnson gave the Royals three points to take the set and match.
Ambrose led the team with 10 kills and also recorded three digs and two service aces. Chaffins finished with seven kills on the afternoon. Melody Washington (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) picked up 16 assists and added six digs. Emily Barcenas (Lawrenceville, Ga./Lanier HS) chipped in eight assists and two service aces. Kenleigh Gunter (Troutville, Va./Lord Botetourt) had a team-best 13 digs. Audrey Antesberger (Scottsville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) had three block assists.
Randolph hosts its first match of the season this Thursday as it welcomes cross-city rival Lynchburg to Giles Gymnasium. Match time is at 5:00 p.m.
