NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Randolph softball traveled eastward on Sunday to face #3 Christopher Newport. The Captains took both games of the doubleheader 3-1 and 12-2.
In the first game, CNU struck first with a run scored in the bottom of the second inning. The WildCats tied it up in the top of the third on a Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) RBI single.
The score remained 1-1 until the Captains' portion of the sixth inning. CNU pushed across a pair of runs to go ahead 3-1. The WildCats went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh.
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) got the start in the circle for Randolph. She surrendered three runs on four hits, walking four, and striking out three.
In the second game, Randolph went ahead 1-0 on an Allie Jarrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) RBI single to right field. CNU scored twice in the first and three times in the second inning to go ahead 5-1. The WildCats got one run back as Hawkins singled in a run to close the score to 5-2.
The Captains added a run in the third and then scored six times in the fourth to break the game open. Randolph managed a two-out single in the fifth inning but could not get the run home as the game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) went 1 2/3 innings giving up five runs (three earned) on three hits. She walked on batter. Braelyn Cooper (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) came in relief for 1 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs on six hits, walking two, and striking out one. Danielle Shannon (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) entered for one inning and struck out one batter.
Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) was 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and a stolen base. Taylor Friess (Goode, Va./Liberty) was 1-for-2 with a stolen base.
Randolph heads to Greensboro for a doubleheader on Thursday. Game times are 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
