GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Randolph softball travelled down to North Carolina for a late week doubleheader with Greensboro. The Pride won with scores of 3-0 and 9-8.
In the first game, all three Pride runs came in the first inning. Other than that blemish, WildCat pitcher Braelyn Cooper (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) and Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) surrendered just two hits over five innings. Cooper herself got out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning as she induced a fielder's choice, lineout, and another fielder's choice to get of the inning unscathed.
The WildCats squandered a scoring situation in the third inning. With one out, Railey Oetken (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) singled, Dominque Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) singled and Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) walked. The runners would be left stranded as Allie Jarrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) popped up to first and Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) flied out to left field.
Starting pitcher Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) pitched one inning. She gave up three runs on five hits and walked two.
Irving was 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot for the WildCats.
In the second game, Randolph got out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Pride countered with a five-run second inning to go ahead 5-3. Madison Jarrelle's (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) two-run single tied the game at 5-5 in the third. Greensboro scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to go up 8-5.
The WildCats needed a rally going into the seventh inning. Nuckols led off with a single to left center. Jarrett singled down the left field line and advanced to second to push Nuckols to third. Hawkins then dropped a double into centerfield to get the 'Cats to within a run of tying. Alyssa Swords (Prince George, Va./Prince George) flied out and Jarrelle grounded out to short to move Hawkins to third. With Kayla Love (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) at the plate, a wild pitch scored Hawkins and the score was tied at 8-8. Greensboro went quietly in the bottom half of the inning and the game then went to extras.
The WildCats went down in their portion of the eighth. In the Pride eighth and a runner placed on second, a sacrifice bunt by Kassie Simmo moved Alexis Sox to third. Jordan Deaton then singled home Sox for the game-winning run.
Cooper went five innings and gave up eight runs (four earned) on 11 hits. She walked one and struck out five. Chloe Persinger (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McClure) came in for 2 1/3 innings and surrendered one unearned run on two hits, walking two and striking out one.
