DANVILLE, Va.- The Randolph men's lacrosse team went on the road Tuesday to face Averett at Campbell Stadium. The WildCats fell behind early in the first quarter and despite a rally in the second half, ultimately fell short to the Cougars 12-5.
The WildCats fall to 0-2 on the season. Averett improves to 3-1.
The 'Cats were down 1-0 less than one minute into the contest. A turnover by Averett led to Randolph's first goal of the afternoon as Jeff Watson (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) assisted Jack Dolan (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) and the score was tied 1-1 with 12:44 remaining in the quarter. AU went on to score six more times to lead 7-1 going into the second period.
The Cougars increased their lead to 8-1 49 seconds into the second quarter. The WildCat defense held firm for most of the stanza. Randolph got on the board a second time as Dolan scored on an assist from Zach Miller (Louisa, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) with 4:15 showing on the game clock. Averett tallied one more score before halftime and led 9-2.
The two teams scored one goal each in the second half. Matthew Piascik (Midlothian, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) netted his first goal of the season at 12:21. A penalty on the WildCats gave the Cougars an extra-man opportunity and they made good with a goal at 11:38 to restore their seven-goal advantage.
The Randolph defense once again was stout in the fourth as it kept Averett off the scoreboard. The WildCats mounted a small rally with back-to-back goals. Miller netted his at 5:25 with Dolan following 20 seconds later and the score was halved at 10-5. Averett, however, was able to stay out in front with two goals in the last 3:21 to hold off the WildCat threat.
Dolan finished with three goals on the day and added three groundballs. Miller scored a goal and added an assist to go with four groundballs. He was 5-of-10 on faceoffs. Calvin Hurt (Lynchburg, Va./New Covenant) tallied an assist and two groundballs. Nick Pietro (Spotsylvania, Va./Massaponax) led with six groundballs and caused two turnovers. Lee Tookes (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) caused three turnovers. William Doyle (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Collegiate) had 15 saves in the cage.
The WildCats' home opener is this Sunday as they host Methodist. Game time from WildCat Stadium is at 1:00 p.m.
