Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WildCats Bested by Hornets 62-47

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team hosted Shenandoah on Sunday afternoon at Giles Gymnasium. The visiting Hornets used a big second quarter to break away from the WildCats and take a 62-47 victory.

Randolph took the lead with the game's first basket on a jumper by Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville). SU would tie and the take the lead for the remainder of the quarter as the advantage dipped no lower than a point. The WildCats trailed 13-12 with 2:02 remaining in the quarter but layups from Shenandoah's Ragan Johnson and a three from Sarah Sondrol staked the Hornets to an 18-12 lead after one quarter of play.

It was still a two-possession game after a layup by Madi Tyree (Forest, Va./Seminole District) at the 7:43 mark of the second quarter. SU then went on a 13-0 run to jump ahead 35-16 with 2:50 showing on the game clock. Shenandoah headed into the locker room on top 39-19.

The Hornets stayed out ahead in the third and fourth quarters. Randolph did outscore the Hornets in both periods, 14-11 and 14-12, respectively.

"I liked our energy and effort throughout the first quarter but the second quarter proved to be our demise" said head coach Steven Lanpher after the game.  "Too many turnovers and we gave up too many offensive rebounds.  The difference in the game was our inability to keep them off the offensive glass and not taking care of the basketball. I liked our grit & effort especially in the 2nd half. I thought we battled and worked hard in the end but we have to learn from our mistakes and start putting together complete games."

Randolph shot 16-of-51 (31.4%) from the floor while Shenandoah was 25-of-65 (38.5%). SU controlled the boards 47-37.

The WildCats were led by Stark's 16 points. She also added six assists, five steals, and five rebounds. Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) scored 10 points and nearly secured a double-double with nine rebounds. Natalie Clark (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) put up nine points and four rebounds.

"Individually, Kylie continues to lead us on both ends with 16 points and five steals," noted Lanpher.  "I thought Cameron O'Neil did a nice job on the boards leading us with nine and Paola Joseph provided some solid minutes off the bench."

Randolph travels to Bridgewater on Thursday. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
