Women’s Basketball Drives Past Regent 86-61 in Home Opener

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team started its 2021-22 season in a big way as they hosted Regent on Friday evening at Giles Gymnasium. The WildCats got out to a big lead early on and never looked back as they defeated the Royals 86-61.

Regent had a 5-4 lead at the 8:10 mark of the first quarter. That would their only lead of the game as the 'Cats outscored the Royals 18-5 for the remainder of the quarter to go up 23-10.

Randolph outscored Regent 22-13 in the second quarter and 22-12 in the third quarter. The WildCat lead grew to as much as 37 points, 66-29, late in the third period. Regent outscored Randolph 26-19 in the final quarter with the game well in hand by that point.

The WildCats shot 30-of-63 (47.6%) from the floor compared to 20-of-60 (33.3%) for Regent. Randolph led in rebounds 47-35.

Randolph led in other statistical categories. They were ahead 26-12 in points off turnovers, 15-10 in second chance points, 41-5 in bench points, and 40-26 in points in the paint.

Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson (Newport News, Va./Heritage) led the 'Cats with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go with seven rebounds. Cierra Cook (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) added 13 points and four assists. Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) chipped in 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting and pulled down five rebounds. Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out three assists.

"I really liked our energy & focus for our first game," said head coach Steve Lanpher.  "I thought we set the tone with our defense early and did a nice job pushing the ball & getting good conversions.   Offensively, we played unselfishly & moved the ball well with 22 assists.  Kylie & Cam showed their leadership on both ends with solid performances on both ends."

"I thought Yanessa Cabrera, Alexis Kiser & Jaidyn Turner did a nice job handling our point guard position & getting us into a nice flow.  Teniyah Crenshaw Patterson was very impressive off the bench & really contributed with 16 pts & seven rebounds." 

The WildCats host Methodist on Sunday afternoon. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
