LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team ended the first month of the season at home against Trinity Washington on Saturday afternoon. Four WildCats scored in doubles figures as Randolph won handily 89-34.
The WildCats improve their record to 5-1 overall, their best start since the 2014-15 season. The 89 points scored were the most in a game for Randolph since scoring 86 against Mary Baldwin in 2016.
Trinity Washington scored the first two baskets of the game in the first quarter to lead 4-0. Following a timeout, the WildCat offense came to life as it outscored Trinity 20-4 for the remainder of the period as Randolph went ahead 20-6. Trinity was held without a field goal for 4:24 of game time.
The WIldCats poured it on in the second quarter as they outscored the visitors 25-9. Trinity did not score a basket until 5:52 remained in the quarter, a span of over 10 minutes of game time.
Randolph outscored Trinity 25-9 in third quarter. It was a tighter margin in the fourth period as it was 19-15 in the WildCats' favor with the game well in hand.
The WildCats shot 45.2% (33-of-73) from the floor and nearly 30% (29.7) from behind the three-point arc. Randolph was also 12-of-17 (70.6%) from the free throw line. The 'Cats totaled 25 assists to set a new game record.
"Nice way to head into Thanksgiving break," said head coach Steve Lanpher. "I thought we really set the tone with our defensive pressure and got Trinity out of sync offensively. I especially loved how unselfish we are as a basketball team and it really showed by recording 25 assists on 33 field goals."
Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson (Newport News, Va./Heritage) scored a team-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and added 13 rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Cierra Cook (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) added 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) chipped in 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting from behind the three-point arc. Alexis Kiser (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) added 11 points, six assists, and two rebounds. Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville), Natalie Clark (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River), and Kendra Smith (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) all had eight points each. Stark tallied nine rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocked shots. Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) dished out seven assists, grabbed five rebounds, and came away with two steals.
"Cierra shot the ball well getting 17 pts & Cameron found her three-point stroke hitting four and recording 12 points," noted Lanpher. "Kylie showed how she can change a game with limited scoring as she had nine rebounds, four steals and four assists to go along with her eight points. Alexis Kiser continued her strong play scoring 11 points to go along with six assists."
Randolph returns to conference play on December 1 when it travels to Guilford. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
