LYNCHBURG, Va.- It was a game fit for two cross-city rivals as the Randolph men's soccer team hosted Lynchburg on Wednesday night at a packed and boisterous WildCat Stadium. The WildCats looked to remain unbeaten on the season but the Hornets denied that opportunity as they would win 2-1.
Randolph's record now stands at 11-1-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Hornets improve to 9-4-1 and 5-1 in the ODAC.
The 'Cats found themselves in a hole early in the first half as Luke Mega scored for Lynchburg in the 11th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Randolph appeared to have tied the game in the 42nd minute off a corner kick but Brandon John (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) was called for a foul and the score remained 1-0 in Lynchburg's favor at halftime.
Randolph looked to get the tying goal in the second half. The WildCats again thought they had a goal at 58:59 but were called offside. Just seconds later, Noah Carney (Charleston, W.V./Homeschool) made it count for good as he sent a shot from the top of the box over the outstretched hands of Hornet keeper Kyle Gallagher and in to tie the contest at 1-1.
Both teams jockeyed for possession in the ensuing minutes with both recording a shot on goal. The Hornets broke through for the second time of the night, however, as a deep shot by Zach Wheland in the 76th minute went in to put Lynchburg ahead 2-1.
The WildCats still had time to tie the game up again. Carney had a shot on frame in the 85th minute that was turned away. With time ticking down, Randolph tried to set up for a last second score as Colby Lambert (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) sent a deep cross from the right side of the field to John but Lynchburg goalkeeper Justin Ennis was there to grab the ball as the game ended.
Randolph outshot Lynchburg 13-7 but the Hornets had five shots on frame to the WildCats' three. The WildCats had four corner kicks to Lynchburg's three.
Zach Aylor (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) had three saves in the net for the 'Cats. Gallagher recorded one save before departing late in the second half. Ennis tallied one save for the Hornets.
Randolph heads on the road to face Roanoke this Saturday. Game time from Salem, Virginia will be at 5:00 p.m.
