LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Salem College in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Spirits took both games by scores of 3-1 and 7-2.
Salem evens its record at 5-5. The WildCats fall to 4-8.
In the opener, the game was scoreless until the third inning when the Spirits scored once to lead 1-0. The game remained that way until the Randolph bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, Delany Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) singled through the left side to score Railey Oetken (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) and the 'Cats would tie the game at 1-1 to send it to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, international tie breaking rules put a runner on second base to start. Salem scored twice to take the lead. Randolph did not have an answer in its portion of the inning as the Spirits came away with the win.
Starting pitcher Danielle Shannon (Greensville, Va./Riverheads) went all eight innings for Randolph. She have gave up three runs (two earned) on nine hits. She struck out two.
Oetken was 2-for-2 at the plate with one run scored. Jhenai Sewer (Newport News, Va./Woodside) was 2-for-3.
In the second game, Salem went ahead 2-0 in the first inning and then added another run in the third to go ahead 3-0. The WildCats rallied in their part of the third inning. Baxley Lockhart's (Suffolk, Va./Kings Fork) sacrifice fly plated a run and Gracie Waller's (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) RBI single scored another as the 'Cats closed to 3-2. Salem pulled further ahead of the WildCats with a three-run fifth and another run in the sixth inning.
Braelyn Cooper (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) tossed three innings in the circle for Randolph. She surrendered three runs on two hits, walking two, and striking out three. Lindsey Kirkland (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and gave up three runs on four hits and walked two batter. Abbi Pannil (Prince George, Va./Prince George) came in for 2 ½ innings and limited the Spirits to one run on three hits. She walked three and struck out six.
Diane Mahiai (Chesapeake, Va./Salem) was 2-for-2 with a double. Waller was 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
Randolph travels to Averett tomorrow for a doubleheader with the Cougars. First pitch for Game 1 is at 2:00 p.m.
