WildCats Fall To Cougars

DANVILLE, Va.- The Randolph softball team traveled down 29 south to Danville as the WildCats played Averett in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday. The Cougars swept the 'Cats with scores of 5-3 and 6-1.

In the first game, Averett scored a pair of runs in the second and third innings to lead 4-0. Randolph got one run back in the fifth inning when Jhenai Sewer (Newport News, Va./Woodside) stole home to make it 4-1.

AU scored once in the sixth inning to go ahead 5-1. The WildCats started a rally in the seventh inning. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) led off with a double and then moved to third on pinch hitter Brittany Gula's (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) single. Sewer walked to load the bases. Diane Mahiai (Chesapeake, Va./Salem) flied out and Blair Epperson (Nathalie, Va./William Campbell) struck out. Alyssa Swords (Prince George, Va./Prince George) then stepped up and hit a double down the left field line to bring in two runs and closed the score to 5-3. Paige Naples (Bedford, Va./Liberty) came up to tie or potentially give the WildCats the lead but she popped out to the pitcher to end the game.

Sewer was 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. She also stole a base. Swords batted 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Abbi Pannil (Prince George, Va./Prince George) started in the circle and pitched 1 2/3 innings. She gave up two earned runs on eight hits, walking two, and striking out four. Danielle Shannon (Greensville, Va./Riverheads) came in for the last 4 1/3 innings. She surrendered two earned runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

In the second game, the WildCats got on the board first. Nuckols led off with a walk and Elyssa Francis (Newport News, Va./Woodside) reached on a fielder's choice that got Nuckols out at second. Sewer singled to move Francis to second. Swords reached on a fielder's choice that got Francis out at home. Tee Davis (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) then singled to bring Sewer to third base but an error by the Averett centerfielder allowed her to score to give Randolph a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars scored once in the second to tie then went ahead for good with another run in the third inning. The 'Cats loaded the bases up in their  part of the third but consecutive fielder's choices got the runner out at home and then a groundout to end the half inning.

Randolph's only other scoring opportunity came in the fifth with runners at the corners and two outs. Baxley Lockhart ( lined out to short to end the threat.

Lindsey Kirkland (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) started and went 3 1/3 innings. She gave up three runs on five hits and three walks. Pannil came in to relieve and pitched the last 2 2/3 innings. She surrendered three runs on three hits and walked three. She struck out one batter.
