Softball Splits at Grand Slam Triangle Classic

Paige Naples hit her first collegiate homerun in Randolph's 3-2 win over Arcadia

RALEIGH, N.C.- The Randolph softball team traveled to the campus of William Peace to compete in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic on Saturday. The WildCats held off Arcadia in the opener 3-2 and lost a close decision to #2 Christopher Newport 2-1.

Against the Knights, the Wildcats scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second inning. Alyssa Swords (Prince George, Va./Prince George) popped out to second base to lead off. Jhenai Sewer (Newport News, Va./Woodside) singled and then Briana Harbison (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) singled to move Sewer to third base. Gracie Waller's (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) groundout to the pitcher advanced Harbison to second. Paige Naples (Bedford, Va./Liberty) then delivered a pitch over the right field wall for her first collegiate home run to give the WildCats a 3-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Danielle Shannon (Greensville, Va./Riverheads) got the win for the 'Cats in the circle. Abbi Pannill (Prince George, Va./Prince George) picked up the save.

In the second game, the Captains hit a solo homerun off starting pitcher Braelyn Cooper (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) to lead 1-0. In the Randolph third inning, Diane Mahiai (Chesapeake, Va./Salem) reached on an error by the CNU third baseman. Railey Oetken (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) got on base on a fielder's choice to force out pinch runner Bailey Kuettner (Concord, Va./Rustburg). Blair Epperson (Nathalie, Va./William Campbell) struck out and then Oetken stole second base. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) reached on an error by the CNU shortstop to score Oetkin and Elyssa Francis (Newport News, Va./Woodside) popped out to shortstop to end the inning.

Christopher Newport went ahead in the fifth on a RBI single by Sarah Proctor. Starting pitcher Trish Webb tossed seven innings of no-hit ball. She walked one and struck out five. Cooper went six innings and gave up two runs on four hits, walking two, and striking out three.

Randolph returns tomorrow to play Piedmont at 9:30 a.m. The WildCats finish with North Carolina Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m.
