WINSTON, SALEM, N.C.- The Randolph women's lacrosse team traveled to North Carolina for a non-conference game with Salem College on Saturday. The WildCats forced an extra period but the Spirits scored the game winner late in overtime to win 16-15.
Sarah Perry (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) picked up where she left off from last week as she scored the first goal of the game 28 seconds in. She would score six times in the half with her sixth goal giving the 'Cats a 9-7 lead with 1:33 remaining. Salem cut it to a one-goal deficit with under a minute left but Olivia Richards (Whispering Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) would score with eight ticks left to give Randolph a 10-8 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the WildCats held a 13-11 lead with 17:46 showing on the game clock. Salem scored four straight times to overtake Randolph and pulled ahead for its first lead of the afternoon, 15-13. Goals by Emily Laframboise (Cornwall, Vt./Middlebury) and Shannon McQuaid (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) tied the contest at 15-15 with 3:31 left in regulation. The Sprits nearly had the game winner with 42 seconds left to play but Sara Jimenez's shot hit the post on a free position and the game went into overtime.
Randolph won the draw control to begin overtime. McQuaid had a shot that was blocked. A foul on Jenn Weigle (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) gave Salem's Danielle Allen a free position shot and she made the attempt to give Salem the win.
Perry led with seven goals. She also picked up seven ground balls and won eight draw controls. Laframboise tallied three scores to go with three assists, three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and one draw control. McQuiad and Allie Fields (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) both had two goals each. Richards had one goal.
Kate Hodgkiss (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) stopped five shots in the net for Randolph. She scooped up three groundballs and caused two turnovers.
Randolph led in total shots 34-26 and in shots on goal 24-21. The WildCats also led in groundballs 28-22 and draw controls 20-13.
The WildCats return home to host Greensboro next Saturday. Game time will be at 1:00 p.m.
