FERRUM, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team led host Ferrum 28-21 at halftime but the Panthers would go on to outscore the WildCats 48-23 in the second half as they won 69-51. Randolph falls to 5-10 overall and 1-8 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while Ferrum improves to 3-13 and 3-6 in the ODAC.
Trailing 6-3 early in the first quarter, the 'Cats used an 11-0 run to take a 14-6 lead. Randolph led by as much as nine points, 17-8, with under seven minutes to play in the second quarter. The Panthers made it a two-possession contest, 17-13, with exactly six minutes showing on the game clock. The WildCats were able to stay out in front and held a seven-point advantage at the break.
Ferrum closed in quickly just over a minute into the third quarter as consecutive WildCat turnovers turned into two Panthers baskets. The Panthers' Kayla Cabiness was responsible for all nine points in Ferrum's 9-2 run that tied the game at 30-30 at 7:48.
Back-to-back baskets by Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) staked Randolph to a 35-30 lead just under the seven-minute mark. A 17-6 Ferrum run to close out the quarter put the home team up 46-42 at the conclusion of the third.
A layup by Yanesa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) closed the WildCat deficit to two points to begin the fourth quarter. A 13-0 Panther run broke the game open and pitted Ferrum to its biggest lead of the day, 59-44, with a little over six minutes to play. Randolph got as close as 10 points, 61-51, with 1:41 remaining but the Panthers outscored the WildCats 8-0 to close out the victory.
Randolph shot just under 30% (29.85) overall while Ferrum had a shooting percentage of 53.3%. The Panthers shot 80% overall in the fourth quarter alone. Ferrum was nearly perfect from the free throw line as it converted 94.1 % of its attempts.
Ferrum controlled the paint with a 24-6 advantage. Randolph had a slight lead in points off turnovers (17-16) and second chance points (7-5). The Panthers controlled the glass 38-27.
O'Neil scored a season-high 15 points to lead the WildCats. Amber Garrett (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) added 10 points. Cabrera finished with 10 points, five assists, and three steals.
Randolph travels to Hollins this coming Wednesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
