Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team concluded its weekend at Virginia Wesleyan with back to back matches on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats fell to the host Marlins 3-0 in the first match and dropped a 3-1 decision to Pitt-Bradford in the second.
Match 1: Va. Wesleyan 3 Randolph 0
The Marlins got out to a 5-0 lead to begin the first set and it grew to 10-4. The WildCats fought back to get to within one point of tying at 11-10. Another 5-0 run by Virginia Wesleyan gave it back their six point lead, 16-10. The 'Cats rallied again to get to within five points of tying but the Marlins stayed out in front to take the set.
In the second set, both teams traded off points to start. While the Marlins held the advantage for most of the frame, Randolph held firm and would eventually go ahead 20-18. Virginia Wesleyan gained the upper hand in the end as it used a 7-1 run to close out the set and lead 2-0.
The third set mirrored the second with both teams again trading off points to begin. The WildCats trailed 12-10 but could not get any closer as the Marlins held of the Randolph threat to win the set 25-17.
Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) tallied 16 kills to lead Randolph and added eight digs. Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) had 26 assists and 14 digs. Kennedy Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) chipped in 11 digs.
Match 2: Pitt-Bradford 3 Randolph 1
In the first set, neither team could establish any momentum to break away. The two teams were tied 12-12 until the Panthers went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 18-12 and had enough of a cushion to claim the opening frame.
Pitt-Bradford got out to a 9-1 lead in the second set and did not look back as the Panthers won 25-18. The third stanza was a different story as the WildCats would not let the Panthers run away. Pitt-Bradford led 18-16 but a kill by Taylor Webb and three straight Panther attack errors staked the 'Cats to a 20-18 advantage. Randolph outscored the Panthers 5-2 to win the third set 25-20.
Pitt-Bradford answered in the fourth set and got out to an 11-2 lead. Randolph recovered to within six points late but it was not enough as the Panthers took the set 25-18.
Ambrose led in kills with nine with Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) adding eight and Logan Warren (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School) seven. Taylor Webb picked up 30 assists. Sam Verhaagen (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Christian) led in kills with 19 while Kennedy Webb finished with 14 and Ambrose 13. Audrey Antesberger (Scottsville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) had four blocks.
Randolph will compete at the Maroon Classic next Friday on Roanoke's campus. The WildCats will face Methodist at 2:00 p.m. followed by Greensboro at 8:00 p.m.
