LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted Roanoke in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at the RAD Center. The Maroons led throughout despite several Randolph threats on their way to a 79-64 win.
Roanoke improves to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC. Randolph falls to 3-5 and 1-2.
The Maroons led by as much as eight points, 25-17, with 9:39 remaining in the first half. The WildCats were able to stay in pursuit as they got to within three points on three occasions. Roanoke went into the locker room ahead 38-32.
Roanoke saw its lead grow to 13 points, 51-38, with 13:38 remaining to play. Randolph stormed back with a 13-0 run that ended with a three-point basket from Brian Smith (Dumfries, Va./C.D. Hylton) with 10:43 left on the clock as the game was tied at 51-51. The Maroons quickly built their lead back up again to eight points but the WildCats answered with another run to cut to within one point, 59-58, with 6:51 left.
It was still a one-possession contest, 64-61, with 5:27 left and Randolph had time to make another run. Roanoke proved to be too much in the end as a 14-3 run let the Maroons pull away in the end for the victory.
Roanoke converted 51% (26-of-51) of its baskets compared to 32.1% (18-of-56) for Randolph. Rebounds were in the Maroons' favor 40-30.
Smith led the 'Cats with 19 points on 6-of-17 shooting and was 5-of-10 from behind the three point arc. Zach Hinton (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) added 10 points including going 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Jerry Goodman (Suffolk, Va./Portsmouth Christian School) chipped in nine points. Justin Dula (Taylorsville, N.C./Alexander Central) pulled down a team-best 13 rebounds and dished out four assists to go with four points.
Randolph will host Apprentice in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
