ST. MARY'S MD.- The Randolph men's basketball team traveled to the eastern shore of Maryland for a non-conference game with St. Mary's College on Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks controlled the game from the onset on their way to an 89-55 victory.
St. Mary's jumped out to a 10-0 lead on the WildCats in the first half. The Seahawk lead grew to as much as 17 points, 24-7, with 11:27 remaining in the half. Randolph would get as close as 11 points, 27-16, with 8:01 showing on he clock but the Seahawks continued to build their lead up and went into the locker room ahead 45-24. St. Mary's added to its lead in the second half as Randolph could only get as close as 19 points.
The WildCats collectively shot close to 35% from the field while the Seahawks shot 49.3%. St. Mary's was also better from three-point range as it was 10-of-22 (45.5%) compared to Randolph's 6-of-27 (22.2%). Free throw shooting favored the Seahawks as they were good on 68.4% (13-of-19) to the WildCats' 45.5% (5-of-11).
St. Mary's big advantage came in points off turnovers as they scored 30 points off 23 turnovers. The Seahawks led in the paint 40-24. Randolph did lead in rebounds 43-39.
Evan Makle (Dumfries, Va./Christ Chapel Academy) led the 'Cats with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. He added three rebounds and three assists. Brian Smith (Dumfries, Va./C.D. Hylton) tallied 14 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. CJ Loving (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) chipped in 11 points and five rebounds. Justin Dula (Taylorsville, N.C./Alexander Central) pulled down a team-high 10 boards to go along with eight points and two blocks.
The WildCats now prepare for a two-game trip to Florida as the team participates in the Cruzin Classic. Randolph faces SUNY New Paltz next Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
