HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.- The 2019 regular season in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference came to a close on Tuesday night. Randolph took on first place Hampden-Sydney at Hellmuth Gibson Field. The Tigers led 2-0 at halftime and held the WildCats scoreless as they won 3-0.
With the victory, Hampden-Sydney clinches the ODAC regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming tournament. Randolph is the eighth seed and will host Bridgewater on Friday.
Randolph starting goalkeeper Erick Cortez-Martinez (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth) stopped a pair of shots in the first five minutes of the first half. The Tigers, however, were able to get one past Cortez-Martinez at 28:50 to give the home team a 1-0 lead. H-SC upped its advantage to 2-0 three minutes before halftime.
The WildCat defense had the upper hand in the second half as it slowed down the Tiger offense to keep the game close. The 'Cats had scoring opportunities but Hampden-Sydney goalie Ian Conner stymied the Randolph threats. The Tigers scored their third goal of the night in the 87th minute.
The Tigers led 16-12 in total shots and had a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. Noah Carney (Charleston, W.V./Homeschool) had five of the WildCats' shots and had four on goal. Corner kicks favored Hampden-Sydney 9-4.
Cortez-Martinez finished with six saves on the night. Conner had seven saves.
Game time for Friday's First Round match will be at 7:00 p.m.
