LYNCHBURG, VA – Brie Holdren scored 16 points, tying a career-high, but the Randolph College women's basketball team dropped its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest with Roanoke College on Tuesday night, 75-56. It is the only time in the regular season the two teams will play against each other.
The Maroons started out as the aggressor, scoring eight straight before Taylor Samuels knocked down a three. Roanoke once again went on a small run following the three, scoring five of seven, as Holdren hit a close shot in the middle of the visitors run.
Holdren then hit a jumper to cut the deficit to six, but the Maroons scored seven of the next nine to push the lead to 11. Samuels hit a jumper with 26 seconds left in the period off a pass from Abigail Bullins, putting the score at 20-11 entering the second.
The second period belonged to the visitors. Korin Harris scored an early bucket off a nice dish from Bullins, and Holdren added a late layup, but Roanoke tallied 17 points in between to take a 37-15 advantage into the half.
The Maroons started the third with a quick push, but several players combined for the WildCats to cut the deficit. Harvey tallied three early points, while Samuels and Jacqueline Hockman each hit jumpers. Daijah Johnson hit a jumper with 4:03 left in the third, before Harvey hit a three and followed it with a jumper to bring the disadvantage to 23.
Johnson converted a nice steal late in the third, which was followed by a jumper from Holdren to help cut the visitor's lead further. However, the Maroons hit two free throws at the end to give them the 57-34 advantage.
Holdren continued her strong night at the beginning of the fourth, knocking down a shot from distance. It was answered on the other end by Cary Beahm, but Korin Harris made a layup to trim the lead once again. The teams then began an exchange of baskets, with Harvey and Bullins each scoring three points. Roanoke followed it with a small run, but the 'Cats answered as Darian Thornton (two) and Holdren (five) scored seven straight. The two teams went back and forth, with Camille Gallagher scoring the final points for Randolph.
Holdren's 16 points led the WildCats, while Harvey also added 11 points and five rebounds in the game. Harris pulled down 10 rebounds for the 'Cats. Beahm led Roanoke (11-10 overall, 7-6 ODAC) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Bridget Holleran tallied 13 points and assisted on nine baskets.
