Second Half Helps R-MC Defeat WildCats' Women's Basketball
ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon College outscored the Randolph College women's basketball team by 15 points in the second half, on the way to winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest 90-66 on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets started the first period quickly. Hope Randolph scored for the 'Cats to tie the score at two just over a minute in, but R-MC scored 12 of the next 13 to take a lead. It was at this time that the WildCats began to chip away at the deficit. Daijah Johnson and Abigail Bullins scored five points around only two home free throws. Rebecca Harvey followed Bullins' three with two of her own from the charity stripe.
Randolph-Macon scored six straight, but Taylor Samuels and Jacqueline Hockman tallied five total points before the end of the period, bringing the score to 22-15 at the end of the first.
The two teams started the second by trading baskets and points for almost four minutes. Kelsey Wisner hit a three to put the Yellow Jacket lead at 10, but Hockman made a difficult layup down the other end to bring it back to eight. After an R-MC free throw, the WildCats scored six of eight, as Alexis Calloway, Samuels and Harvey combined to bring the deficit to five. Randolph-Macon responded with a seven-point run.
The 'Cats answered with five free throws by three different players. However, the hosts scored four of the last six to take a 45-36 lead into the half.
Just as in the start of the game, the Yellow Jackets came out of the intermission very strong, scoring 10 of the first 12. The two teams went back and forth following that streak, as Harvey tallied four points and Hope Randolph scored two. R-MC went on a small run, before the 'Cats ended the period with a 7-2 spurt. Calloway, Korin Harris, and Hope Randolph all tallied two during the run which brought the score to 66-51 at the end of the third.
Once again, Randolph-Macon started a period off quickly, tallying seven of nine points, with Harris being the only WildCat to score. But Randolph would continue to fight. Bullins (four), Harris (three), and Hockman (two) combined on an 8-2 run, to cut the disadvantage. However, the hosts responded with a large run over the remainder of the period to seal the victory.
Rebecca Harvey led the WildCats with 13 points. Bullins tallied 10, while Hope Randolph scored 12 and was one of three players with seven rebounds. Harris and Calloway were the other two as the 'Cats outrebounded the hosts by four. Katie Anderson tallied a double-double for the Yellow Jackets (12-11 overall, 7-7 ODAC) as she scored 31 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Randolph (4-19, 2-12) returns home for its final two regular-season games. The WildCats host crosstown rival Lynchburg College (18-4, 11-2) on Wednesday night, with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
