WildCats VB Drops ODAC Match to Shenandoah
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College volleyball team took on its second Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) team in less 24 hours at the RAD Center, and fell in three sets to Shenandoah University 19-25, 13-25, and 11-25 on Saturday.
The Hornets jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the first set, but the 'Cats stormed back with five of their own. Alex Mariona and Noelle Wojciechowski slammed home two separate Brooks Gillerlain assists. However, SU came right back taking 13 of the next 17 points, in order to gain a 20-9 lead. But the WildCats did not give up, and went on two separate comebacks. Mariona led the way with two kills and two aces during the two situations. Following a late timeout by Shenandoah, the Hornets finished off the set 25-19.
In the second, Randolph took a 4-2 lead to start with Brittany Nicholson highlighting that time with a kill. But the Hornets came back and took the advantage. However, the WildCats kept it close, including keeping the lead at two for several points. SU then scored 10 of the last 13 points, to take the set 25-13. Shenandoah continued that momentum over to the third and opened up an early lead that the WildCats could not overcome before falling in the final set.
Gillerlain once again had a tremendous match, recording double-digit assists for the tenth time this year. She finished with 12, and added six digs defensively. Elisabeth Price had a strong showing as the libero, finishing with a team-high 14 digs.
Brandi Griffith had a game-high 22 digs for the Hornets (7-4 overall, 2-0 ODAC). Rachel Cerretani and Jasmine Callahan combined assist duties for SU, finishing with 14 and 12 respectively.
The WildCats (2-10, 0-3) begin a very busy week on Tuesday. Randolph travels to Eastern Mennonite University, which is its first match of three, with them being played in four days. The 'Cats match at EMU begins at 7 p.m.
