Randolph Volleyball Drops Two on First Day of Classic
SALEM, VA – The Randolph College volleyball opened up play in the Roanoke College Maroon Classic, and fell in two intense matches. In the WildCats first match, Randolph lost in five games to Mary Baldwin College 19-25, 25-13, 25-16, 24-26, and 11-15, before falling to Virginia Wesleyan College in three sets.
The outing against the Fighting Squirrels was the second five-set match for the 'Cats in as many matches. Randolph almost won the match in the fourth set, but MBC pulled it out at the last minute. Alex Mariona led three WildCats in double-digit kills with 14. Autumn Troxell and Brittany Nicholson each had ten. Brooks Gillerlain provided another steady hand as the setter notching 32 sets in the match. Nicholson and Abby Bane registered 14 and 15 digs respectively.
In the last match of the evening on Court Two, fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival VWC got the best of the WildCats in three sets. The final score for the three matches were 14-25, 9-25, and 18-25. Mariona led the way once again with 11 kills and seven digs. Bane displayed some defensive prowess with 11 digs in the match.
Randolph (2-5 overall) finishes up the two-day tournament on Saturday with two more matches. The 'Cats play Meredith College at noon and then have their rematch with Ferrum College at 2 p.m.
