WildCats Winning Streak Ended in ODAC Tourney

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Randolph College volleyball team had its four-match winning streak ended against Virginia Wesleyan College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Quarterfinals on Wednesday night.  The #2 Marlins swept the seventh-seeded 'Cats 14-25, 24-26, and 8-25.

VWC jumped out to a quick three-point lead in the first set, before Elisabeth Price served an ace following a Marlin error.  Virginia Wesleyan went on a run to extend the advantage to eight, but Randolph responded.  Brooks Gillerlain and Alex Mariona added kills to narrow the lead.  The teams exchanged points the entire rest of the set as the Marlins won the game.

The WildCats came out strong in the second set, opening a 5-2 lead and forcing the Marlins into a timeout.  Autumn Troxell, Price, and Rebecca Lesnak all had kills in the run.  VWC responded coming out of the timeout, scoring eight of nine, to take a narrow advantage.  The 'Cats came back and scored three of four to tie the score, as Noelle Wojciechowski, Mariona, and Lesnak slammed home their attempts.  Virginia Wesleyan then answered with six of seven to open a five point advantage.  However, Randolph fought back once again.  The WildCats tied the score at 22-all as Troxell registered two kills, Wojciechowski, Lesnak, and Gillerlain all added one each.  Virginia Wesleyan scored twice, before Randolph did the same to take away game point.  Unfortunately the Marlins scored two in a row to win.

In the third, the WildCats kept it close early on as Mariona tied the score at 3-3.  However, the Marlins went on a large run, and would hold that lead until the victory.

The WildCats season ended, and so does the careers of Price, Wojciechowski, Cassie Maddox, Andrea Mewhinney, and Katie Brown, but all played well in their final appearances.  Brown had a game-high 15 digs as the libero, and Wojciechowski was one of two 'Cats with more than 10 attempts to hit over .300 (.312; Troxell hit .333).  Gillerlain closed out her first season with double-digit assists, recording 15 in the match.

Randolph begins its offseason finishing the season with an 8-20 overall record.  The Marlins advance to the ODAC semifinals, to be played at Randolph-Macon College on Saturday.
