WildCats Fall to Emory & Henry in Home and ODAC Opener
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's basketball team dropped its home opener to Emory & Henry College on Tuesday night 75-49. The game also served as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both institutions.
The WildCats were the first team on the board, as Taylor Samuels opened up the RAD Center with a layup. Following two baskets by the Wasps, Samuels scored again to tie the score. Jacqueline Hockman followed the jumper with a layup of her own to give the 'Cats the early lead. Asja Jenkins hit a layup for E&H, but Randolph responded as Rebecca Harvey went to line, and sunk two to give the lead back to the 'Cats. However, the Wasps scored 12 of the next 14 to end the period with an 18-10 advantage.
The two teams traded points the entire second quarter. When one team scored, the other team followed. Alexis Calloway had an old-fashioned three-point play, and Megan Jacoby followed it with a shot from behind the arc. Abigail Bullins knocked down a three with 3:02 remaining, and Emory & Henry responded with a layup and a free throw from two different players. But at the end of the period, Calloway made a nice steal and fed the ball to Bullins on the break. She converted the layup as the buzzer went off signaling the half. The Bullins basket put the score at 34-28 entering the intermission.
The third period belonged to the Wasps, as they went on a large run, before Korin Harris knocked down a jump shot. Emory & Henry then finished the period on another run to give the Wasps a commanding lead at the end of the period. However, the WildCats fought back to begin the fourth, and cut the deficit by nine after a Harvey three-point field goal. But, E&H closed out the period with another run, giving the Wasps the win.
Harvey tied her high in only her fourth game, as she led the team with 11 points. Bullins added 10, while Calloway finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and seven rebounds. Karina Farr finished with a game-high 16 points for the Emory & Henry (4-0 overall, 1-0 ODAC). Tamara Brewster and Jacoby both tallied double-figures as well, with 13 and 11 respectively.
Randolph (0-4, 0-1) will continue its three-game homestand after Thanksgiving. The 'Cats will take on Averett University on Wednesday, December 2, at 7 p.m.
