WildCats Fall to Maroons in ODAC Play

SALEM, VA – The Randolph College volleyball team took on Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) leader Roanoke College, and fell 20-25, 16-25, and 21-25 on Friday night.

The WildCats were the stronger team for much of the first set.  Katie Brown tied the set early after two straight aces and then after Roanoke took a two-point lead, Randolph responded with three straight to go up one at 7-6.  After a quick tie by the Maroons, the 'Cats notched seven of the next eight, which included aces by Elisabeth Price and Brooks Gillerlain, and kills by Autumn Troxell and Andrea Mewhinney.  Roanoke came right back and brought the game within one, before Troxell and Noelle Wojciechowski killed two passes from Gillerlain to give Randolph a 16-13 advantage.  The Maroons responded with their own seven out of eight run to put the 'Cats in a three-point disadvantage.  However, Randolph answered with three straight, finalized by an Alex Mariona ace.  But Roanoke countered and finished out the game scoring the next four of five.

The 'Cats kept it close early in the second as well, as Mariona, Wojciechowski, and Rebecca Lesnak recorded early kills.  After the Maroons pushed the lead to three, Randolph responded to bring it within one, including another pinpoint serve from Price.  However, Roanoke pushed the advantage to four, and would keep it no smaller than three, before making its final push to win the set.

Roanoke opened up the third with four-straight points, and ended up stretching its lead to 10 more than halfway through the set.  But the WildCats once again showed the ability to take control of the match.  Mariona started it off with a kill and the 'Cats would cut it to seven soon after.  After two Maroon points, Randolph rallied for four of the next five.  Roanoke then scored so that its next would be match point, but the WildCats fought back once more.  The 'Cats scored four straight, yet the Maroons closed out the match with the next point.

Gillerlain assisted on 13 kills in the match, her 14th game this year with double-digit assists.  Mariona and Price played well defensively, with 11 and 10 digs respectively.

Sydney Daniel led Roanoke (16-0 overall, 6-0 ODAC) with a game-high 10 kills.  Jessica Block registered 27 assists in the win.

Randolph (2-15, 0-6) travels up to Pennsylvania for a tri-match on Saturday.  The WildCats will take on Haverford College at 3 p.m. and then will play the hosts of the event, Gettysburg College, at 5 p.m.
