Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. -- The nation's leader in assist-to-turnover ratio had the biggest assist of his young career, providing the game-winner with 10.1 seconds left.
First-year Joe Sands, who came into today with a Division III best 16-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, only had one helper today, but it set up junior Zach Desgain on a backdoor cut with 10.1 seconds to go, giving Randolph the win, 63-62, over Shenandoah.
In the wild, back-and-forth affair, Desgain put the WildCats up on three separate occasions in the final minute, hitting two free throws with 1:00 left and a right-handed floater with 32.7 seconds left.
His last basket down the right wing came despite a foul and, after a timeout, the WildCats locked down on defense to preserve the victory.
Desgain was one of four WildCats in double figures, leading the way with 15 points, including six in the final 60 seconds.
Classmates Jason Eddie and Gordon Rogo each had 13 points, as Rogo increased his ODAC-leading field goal percentage after shooting 6-for-9 from the floor.
Junior Seth Wimbish added a dozen, as the ODAC's leading three point shooter last year had a pair from deep.
Randolph led for most of the first half this afternoon, but a small scoring drought allowed Shenandoah to take a two-point lead with seven minutes left in the period.
The WildCats shut the Hornets out for 5:32, however, using a 10-0 run to get back into control.
An 8-0 run and a 6-0 run early in the second half helped Randolph to its largest lead of the day, 14.
Shenandoah then chipped away before using an 11-0 run 6:08 sliced its deficit to a manageable two.
After an exchange of baskets, Shenandoah scored five straight to finally retake the lead with 1:13 to go.
This was the first of six lead changes in the final 73 seconds, as Desgain then took over offensively, scoring Randolph's final six points, answering every Shenandoah bucket and giving Randolph the victory.
Randolph moves to 4-2 with the win and evens its record at 1-1 in ODAC play. The team next hosts Methodist and Averett next week in non-conference play.
