#6 Volleyball's Historic Season Ends As Comeback Falls Just Short at #3 W&L

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. -- In a battle between the upstart Randolph volleyball team and the ODAC's most accomplished program, the WildCats gave Washington and Lee all it could handle in the conference's quarterfinal, forcing the 14-time ODAC champions to five sets.

Set scores were 25-11, 25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 15-10, as Randolph rallied from a 2-0 hole to force a fifth frame.

Historically, Washington and Lee has had Randolph's number, winning all 32 matchups between these two teams, never conceding a set before this year.

The regular season matchup between these teams featured four sets of exhilaration, however, with 11 consecutive ties in the first set, no set determined by more than three points and Randolph's first-ever set win against the Generals.

While the milestone set win was a step forward, advancing to the ODAC semifinals would require winning three against the Generals, who were ODAC finalists in 18 of the last 19 years and winners of all 12 matches at home this year.

In the first set tonight, the seasoned veterans came out hot, jumping out to a huge 17-4 lead, hitting an incredible .609 in a 25-11 victory.

The second set started with a run from the WildCats, as they jumped out to three separate early leads.

Seven of eight points went the way of the Generals, which opened up a comfortable lead for the hosts.

Randolph rallied to close the gap, slicing a seven-point lead to three on three separate ocassions, but could not get the final burst to equalize, ultimately falling, 25-19.

Needing a third set win, Randolph raced out to a 5-0 advantage, growing a lead as large as 13-5.

The Generals methodically cut the lead, but Randolph had multiple set point chances at 24-19 after a huge kill from junior Marissa McClinton.

After W&L fought off three set points, a bad set gave Randolph their second-ever set win over the Generals.

In the fourth set, there were seven ties before the teams settled in at 11-11. Four straight points on the service of sophomore Alex Mariona put Randolph up, looking to force a fifth set.

The WildCats never trailed again after that point in the frame, forcing a historic fifth set.

In the fifth set, the teams were balanced early, leveling at 7-7, before a service ace from senior Jordan Templin gave Randolph the lead at the changeover.

W&L scored eight of the next 10, however, closing the set with a hard-fought win.

Lesnak had a career match with team-highs of 17 kills and 12 digs. While Templin had 11 of each.

Senior Kerry McMichael, who set the single-match Randolph record in assists last time the WildCats were here, had 37 assists.

Randolph concludes its season with numerous program records and its most wins since 1997.

Since 1997, this is Randolph's third appearance in the ODAC playoffs, with all three trips resulting in losses at the hands of the Generals.
