WildCat Women Suffer Another Heartbreaker in 55-54 Defeat at Washington and Lee

Box Score

LEXINGTON, VA – The Randolph College women's basketball team led 54-45 with 4:42 left in the game but the host Generals of Washington and Lee University scored the last 10 points of the game to capture a 55-54 victory over the WildCats Tuesday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from the Warner Center.

The game was tied at 45 following a jumper by Katy Wilson at the 7:04 mark of the second half, but a three-pointer and two lay-ups from junior Emilee Dunton (Forest, VA/Brookville) as well as a fast break bucket from Megan Russell (Pinnacle, NC/West Stokes) gave the WildCats a nine-point edge.

W&L (6-7/3-4 ODAC) trimmed the Randolph advantage down over the last few minutes, knotting the score at 54 with 1:26 left in the contest on a free throw from Shelbi Hendricks. The first-year forward posted a team-high 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Generals.

After back-to-back turnovers, Randolph (3-11/1-6 ODAC) had the ball and put up two shots for the go-ahead bucket, but couldn't convert. With 11 seconds remaining, W&L came out of a timeout and Wilson drove to her left towards the bucket. Wilson lost the ball and it looked like the game was destined for overtime, but a foul was whistled on the WildCats with 3.5 seconds left. Wilson made one of two at the line, and a Randolph desperation heave at the buzzer was no good, lifting W&L to the victory.

The loss was the WildCats' eighth consecutive defeat, with five of the eight coming by less than 10 points. This is also the third loss in the last six games by three or fewer points. Dunton led all scorers with a season-high 20 points, as she was seven-of-10 from the floor, connecting on five of her seven threes.

Sophomore forward Jensen Hoover (Woodstock, VA/Central) had nine points and nine rebounds, making four-of-five from the floor, and Allie Druffel (Centreville, VA/Westfield) added six points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Bonnie Bishop (Fairfax, VA/Trinity Christian) chalked up five points, making both of her field goals, and Bria Carlisle (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) posted three points, three boards, three assists and two assists.

Randolph made 22-of-55 (38.2 percent) from the field, including knocking down six of its 17 attempts from behind the arc. The WildCats turned the ball over 14 times, which was their second-lowest total of the season, and also had 15 assists on the 21 made buckets.

In addition to Hendricks' double-double, Wilson scored eight points to go with a game-high 12 rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks. Megan Marks scored 10 points and Annie Gauf and Wesleigh Vick each had six points apiece. W&L made 12-of-16 (75 percent) from the line and won the rebounding battle 46-33.

Randolph will return home to battle Roanoke College Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in more ODAC action from the Randolph Athletics and Dance Center.
