Box Score 2 SALEM, VA – The Randolph College volleyball squad concluded play at the 2012 Roanoke College Maroon Classic Saturday afternoon with two matches, defeating Hollins University in straight sets with scores of 25-23, 25-9, and 25-23. The WildCats couldn't complete the 4-0 weekend though, as Randolph dropped its final match to host Roanoke College in four games.
In the first match of the afternoon, the WildCats earned a 3-0 victory over Hollins University (5-15) much in part to the defense at the net. Randolph (5-16) held HU to a hitting percentage of -.008, thanks to its 11.5 blocks and 67 digs on the contest. The WildCats were led offensively by the 11 kills on 25 attacks from Celine Rhodes (Barhamsville, VA/Jamestown). The contest marked the third straight contest and the fifth time in the last seven matches Rhodes registered double-digit kills.
Sophomore Jordan Templin (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co.) had a game-high 17 kills in addition to her five kills, while Lexi Harrington (Clemmons, NC/West Forsyth) added 13 kills. Senior Sam Sublett (Bedford, VA/Staunton River) had five kills and five blocks, Andrea Mewhinney (Sanford, NC/Overhills) added 16 assists, and Katherine Lesnak (Blountville, TN/Sullivan Central) registered 11 digs.
In the second match of the night, Randolph battled tournament host Roanoke College to a four-set match, but fell to the Maroons (13-10) with scores of 20-25, 25-18, 25-20 and 25-16. Templin led all scorers for the WildCats, as she tallied 17 kills on 35 attempts for a hitting clip of .429. Templin also chalked up a whopping 29 digs, the third-most all-time in a four-set match at Randolph.
Rhodes completed her amazing weekend with 14 kills, and sophomore setter Kerry McMichael (Westminster, SC/West Oak) returned to form with 25 assists. Harrington chalked up 25 digs, which tied for the sixth-most in a match that went four games, and Lesnak thwarted 11 attempts with her defensive play. Sublett continued to rack up blocks, denying four attacks, three coming by herself. Randolph hit .119 in the match, tallying 46 kills on 160 swings, making 27 errors. Defensively, the WildCats were solid, posting 82 digs and eight total blocks.
Randolph will return to the court Wednesday at home with a contest against the Wasps of Emory & Henry College at 7 p.m. in the Randolph Athletics and Dance (RAD) Center.
