Two Former Randolph Men’s Basketball Players Among Distinguished Young Alumni Award Recipients

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Randolph College on Friday evening recognized three outstanding graduates with the Distinguished Young Alumni Award, including two former men's basketball players: Caleb Pearson'11 and Derrick Woods-Morrow'12.

Pearson is a real estate entrepreneur, investor, and founding partner of 890 Capital. One of the Southeast's top-performing real estate professionals, he built and led the No. 1 RE/MAX team in South Carolina for seven consecutive years before transitioning his team to eXp Realty in 2025.

Over the course of his career, Pearson has personally closed more than 1,500 home sales while building a diverse real estate investment portfolio and completing multiple large commercial projects.

Through Homebuyers SC, a company he founded in 2017, he has overseen the acquisition, renovation, and resale of more than 400 properties and today owns nearly 300 rental units.

As co-founder of 890 Capital, he also helps provide financing to experienced real estate investors nationwide. Since its inception more than two years ago, he and his partner have built the fund up to more than $20 million in assets under management.

Woods-Morrow is a nationally recognized multidisciplinary artist and practitioner whose work explores race, sexuality, intimacy, and memory through photography, film, performance, and sculpture.

His work has been exhibited at leading museums and institutions nationally and internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Kunsthal kAde in the Netherlands, the Schwules Museum in Germany and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

He has received numerous national and international residencies and fellowships, including the Edith and Philip Leonian Fellowship at the Center for Photography at Woodstock; residencies at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, the Camargo Foundation (Cassis, France), and the Chicago Artists Coalition's BOLT residency.

His honors include the Inaugural Bobby Anspach Studios Foundation Award (2026), RISD's Expanded Field Fund (2025/2024), the MacColl Johnson Fellowship (2023), the Black Artists + Designers Guild Creative Visionary Award (2023), and the 3Arts Gary & Denise Gardner Fund Award (2022).

Woods-Morrow is a member of the Chicago-based collective Concerned Black Image Makers and formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Fire Island Artist Residency, known as the first LGBTQ artist residency in the world.

Woods-Morrow is the Schiller Family Associate Professor of Race in Art and Design in the Sculpture Department at the Rhode Island School of Design and has been a visiting artist and lecturer at numerous other institutions.
