The Randolph men's tennis team will make its third straight appearance in the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals as the WildCats host Virginia Wesleyan. Randolph is the fourth seed and the Marlins are the fifth seed. The match will be Tuesday on the WildCat courts at 3:00 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the match will be played at the Liberty University Indoor Tennis Facility.
How They Got Here: Randolph went 12-5 in the regular season and 6-2 in conference play. The WildCats' 12 overall wins are a program record while the six ODAC wins matches the record set in 2017. The WildCats finished in a three-way tie with Shenandoah and Averett for 2-3-4. The tiebreaker went to lots. The Hornets had the #2 lot, the Cougars the #6 lot, and the WildCats the #7 lot. The Marlins were 12-9 overall and 4-4 in ODAC play. VWU was tied with Lynchburg and Hampden-Sydney. Virginia Wesleyan defeated both the Hornets and Tigers to claim the fifth seed.
The Series: The two teams will be meeting for the 19th time overall. Virginia Wesleyan leads 17-2.
Last Time: The teams last played each other on Randolph's home court on April 18. The WildCats won the match 5-2, which broke an eight-match winless streak to the Marlins and was Randolph's first win over Virginia Wesleyan since 2017. Randolph led 1-0 after doubles play. Jacob Martin defeated Ayaan Choudhary 7-5, 6-0 at first singles. Andreas Mulner was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Jed Platts at second singles. Vincenzo Marchese won 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 over Veikko Sivonen at third singles. Aksel Tinnes-Rimehaug won by injury retirement at fourth singles.
In the ODAC Tournament: Randolph is making its seventh ODAC Tournament appearance overall. This is the third matchup between the Marlins and WildCats in the ODAC Tournament. The two schools played each other in 2015 and 2024 with VWU winning both times 5-0. Virginia Wesleyan has qualified for the Tournament every year since 2010 outside of 2020 when the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Marlins have advanced to the ODAC Championship six times (2014, 2015, 2016, 2021, 2022).
The WildCats: Four WildCats have 10 or more singles wins on the season. Mulner is 16-6 playing primarily at second singles. Martin is 13-5 playing mostly at first singles. He was recently ranked #15 in the Atlantic South Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Vincenzo Marchese is 14-5 with a 9-5 record at third singles. Tinnes-Rimehaug has gone 12-7 in his first year with the WildCats. He has played to an 8-5 record at fourth singles. Tinnes-Rimehaug and Jason Duval have had great success as a doubles duo as they have a collective 14-6 record. Mulner and Martin are 12-9 with a 9-7 dual record at first doubles.
The Marlins: Choudhary has fashioned a 7-7 record and has gone 5-5 at first singles. Platts has 10 overall wins and has gone 6-4 at the #2 position. Sivonen has gone 1-3 at #3 singles. Sebastien Muller is 5-4 at #4. Platts and Choudhary are the tops doubles team for Virginia Wesleyan.
