GROVE CITY, Pa.- The Randolph men's volleyball team continued its road trip in the Keystone State as the WildCats took on host Grove City on Friday evening. The two teams battled back and forth but it was Randolph that came out on top in the end as it won 3-2 (26-24, 19-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-11).
The WildCats scored the first point in the first set but the Wolverines answered with three straight points to lead 3-1. The two teams exchanged points until GC pulled ahead to take the lead 15-11. Randolph rallied and eventually came back to grab the lead back and go up 23-22. The score was knotted at 24-24 but the 'Cats registered the last two points to claim the set.
Grove City led to start the second set 4-1 but the 'Cats were able to tie it at 4-all. The Wolverines got the lead back at 5-4 and then swapped points with Randolph. Grove City pulled away and led 17-14. Randolph moved to within three points late but the Wolverines won the set scoring the last three points.
Randolph led 6-2 in the third set and eventually 12-8. The Wolverines tied the set up twice but at 15-15, the WildCats used a 6-1 run to go up 21-16. The 'Cats were at set point at 24-19 until GC rallied to pull within two points at 24-22. Randolph put the match away on a Zachary Septoff (Cumberland, Md.) kill to win 25-22.
Grove City led 1-0 to start the fourth frame. While Randolph was able to tie the set a couple of times, the Wolverines continued to push forward. Their lead grew to six points at 19-13 and 22-16. The WildCats made it 22-19 but GC scored the last three points to force a deciding fifth set.
GC led 2-1 to begin the fifth set. Randolph came back to lead 6-4 but the Wolverines responded to go up 7-6. The WildCats led 10-9 and Grove City tied it up at 10-10. Randolph then went on a 5-1 run in the end which culminated with a Septoff kill as the WildCats took the set and the match.
Septoff led the WildCats with 15 kills and hit .433. Ahmed Diallo (Aurora, Colo./Overland HS) and Shamel Smith (Tamarac, Fla.) both had 12 kills each with Diallo adding 12 digs. Samuel Looney (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley HS) had a team-high 13 digs. Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Insitute) had 11 digs and led in assists with 36. Noah May (Westerville, OH/Thomas Worthington HS) tallied five block assists and two solo blocks.
Randolph is back on the Wolverines' floor tomorrow afternoon. The WildCats faced Mount Aloysius at 12:00 pm and then Olivet at 2:00 p.m.
