Jayden Watkins breaks Pole Vault indoor school record.
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph College men's track and field team turned in several standout performances at The Burg Open, hosted by the University of Lynchburg.
In the field events,
Savion Thomas delivered one of the top performances of the meet for the WildCats, capturing first place in the long jump with a mark of 6.64 meters (21' 9 ¼"). Thomas' jump was just shy of the school record of 6.68 meters set by Philemon Afrifa-Boakye in 2019.
Mario Carter added a strong showing in the jumps as well, finishing second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.80 meters (42' 0"), while also competing in the 60-meter hurdles, placing 10th in the prelims with a time of 9.18.
Another event win came from
Xavier White, who claimed first place in the weight throw with a toss of 13.75 meters (45' 1 ¼"). White also earned a fifth-place finish in the shot put, recording a mark of 12.23 meters (40' 1 ¼").
Julio Alvarenga represented Randolph in the shot put with a throw of 10.69 meters (35' 0 ¾").
On the track,
Leander Jackson led the way in the sprints, placing fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.50, while also competing in the 60-meter dash prelims (7.17).
Emir Jackson posted a strong all-around performance, finishing fourth in the 400-meter dash in 50.99 and seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.64, in addition to running the 60-meter dash prelims (7.36).
Christian Humes added an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter dash at 52.09, while also competing in the 200-meter dash (23.46) and 60-meter dash prelims (7.57).
Several WildCats took part in the 200-meter dash as well, including
James McLean, who finished eighth in 22.73,
Jeff Mendscole (23.62), Jahlil Weeks (23.82),
Immanuel Williams (23.85), and
Christopher Wills (23.90). Wills also competed in the 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 54.78. Additional 60-meter dash prelim competitors included
Kyron Gault (7.41),
Xavier Calloway (7.42), McLean (7.18), Mendscole (7.25), Weeks (7.31), and Williams (7.39).
In the middle-distance races,
Edward Koroma led Randolph in the mile run, finishing in 4:51.78, followed closely by
Aiden Bartulis (5:01.21) and
Jacob Johnson (5:01.28).
The WildCats also found success in the vertical and horizontal jumps.
Jayden Watkins set a new school record in the pole vault, clearing 4.56 meters (14' 11 ½") to place fourth overall.
Peyton Jackson cleared 3.66 meters (12' 0"), while
Ashton Jackson posted a mark of 3.51 meters (11' 6") in the pole vault and 5.93 meters (19' 5 ¼") in the long jump. Calloway finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.98 meters (19' 7 ¼") and also competed in the triple jump (11.00 meters / 36' 1"), while Gault added a long jump mark of 5.81 meters (19' 0 ½").
The WildCats will head to Roanoke College for the Finn Pincus Invitational in Salem, Va, on Jan. 16-17.
